Q: What is a Domain Alias, and how do I create one?

What is a Domain Alias?

Simply put, a Domain Alias is a way to point one domain name to another domain name. Let's say you have 2 domains - example. com and example. org . Your main web site is example.com, but you also registered example.org to prevent others from registering it. Instead of just letting example.org sit there and do nothing, you can create a Domain Alias to example.com for the example.org domain. That way, should someone type example.org into their web browser's address bar, they will be taken to example.com .

How do I create a Domain Alias?

  1. Logon to your Helm Control Panel and click on the Domains link.
  2. From the list, click on the Domain Name for which you want to add a Domain Alias.
  3. Click the Domain Aliases link.
  4. Click the Add New button.
  5. Enter the domain alias name and click Save . Helm will now make all the required changes on the web server to allow you to start using domain aliases.
  6. The final step would be to contact your registrar where you registered the alias domain, and tell them to create an "A" record on their DNS servers that will point the alias domain to your main domain's IP address. Most registrars also provide a way to do this online, but doing it yourself is usually only recommended for users who have some knowledge of DNS.
